San Diego Habitat for Humanity hosted its Veterans Build Nov. 1-5 and announced PNC Bank as the event’s presenting sponsor.

An annual event, Veterans Build brings together more than 100 volunteers from all walks of life to improve housing for veterans in the area. This year, the volunteer teams will provide services for two homes in southeast San Diego, performing essential repairs. For PNC, supporting the event underscores its Main Street approach to doing business and supporting the communities in which it operates.

“PNC Bank is a Main Street Bank, which means we are invested in our communities and employ an on-the-ground approach to supporting them in the way that they most need,” said Alan Prohaska, PNC regional president for San Diego. “In Southern California, and especially San Diego, we recognize how critical our veteran population is, and we want to support these individuals that have given so much to our country in a meaningful way. Habitat’s Veterans Build does that by providing solutions to the real housing challenges they have, and we are proud to support the work they do.”

San Diego County is home to more than 240,000 veterans, one of the highest concentrations in the country. San Diego Habitat for Humanity, as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Veterans Build initiative, provides housing solutions and volunteer and employment opportunities to U.S. veterans, military service members and their families.

Habitat’s veteran services include providing housing solutions – both affordable homeownership opportunities and general home repair and preservation – engaging volunteers in meaningful services, increasing access to financial literacy programs, and hosting special events that raise awareness of veteran housing needs.

The volunteer work at the two homes will include painting the exterior of one house and installing 80 feet of fencing and replacing the front lawn with drought tolerant landscaping on another home.

In addition to volunteering their time, all Veterans Build participants have committed to raising or donating funds that directly support veteran services and the construction and preservation of homes throughout San Diego County.
