Hagia Sophia is among Istanbul’s most famous and fascinating monuments. This great structure was inaugurated by Byzantine Emperor Justinian 1 on 26 December 537. It was built between 532-537 C,E. It combines a longitudinal church and a centralized building in a wholly original manner, with a huge 32-metre main dome.
Centuries of sackings, conquests, sieges, and crusades came to an end in 1453 CE with the fall of Constantinople at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. After the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Mehmed II had it repurposed as a mosque, with the addition of a wooden minaret, a great chandelier, a mihrab, and a minbar.
In 1934 Turkish President Kemal Atatürk secularized the building, and in 1935 it was made into a museum. The Hagia Sophia is a component of a UNESCO World Heritage site called the Historic Areas of Istanbul (designated 1985), which includes that city’s other major historic buildings and locations. Today Hagia Sophia is Turkey's most popular tourist site, attracting more than 3.7 million visitors a year.
On July 10 2020, a Turkish court annulled the 1934 decree by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk which turned the mosque into a museum. This paved the way for president Erdoğan to order the conversion of the historic Hagia Sophia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, back into a mosque. He therefore signed a decree to transfer the management of the site from the Ministry of Culture to the Presidency of Religious Affairs. On Friday July 24 it will open its doors for prayers.
