Hettenleidelheim, known for its clay mining, which began in the second half of the 18th century, expanded around 1830 and experienced tremendous growth during the industrial age from 1870 onwards. Around 1890, there were approximately 130 open-pit and underground mines in the Hettenleidelheim mining district. Today, the area is known as "Erdekaut," a so-called industrial wasteland. However, with its numerous biotopes and the natural regeneration of the industrial remnants, it presents charming contrasts and has developed into a new recreational area.
