Isaias Afwerki, the long-standing leader of Eritrea, is a figure of both reverence and controversy. As the first President of Eritrea, Afwerki played a pivotal role in the country's hard-fought battle for independence from Ethiopia, earning him the status of a national hero. However, his tenure, which began in 1993, has since been marked by allegations of authoritarianism, human rights abuses, and severe repression.

Under his rule, Eritrea has become one of the most secretive and militarized states in the world, often dubbed the "North Korea of Africa."
