Delay in train journey: Here’s how to ask for a full refund!!
The Supreme Court gave a landmark judgment that every passenger’s time is “precious” and India Railways bears the burden of proving the delay if it is beyond its control, like a natural calamity, track repair, etc. But if it was avoidable, passengers can claim a refund.
The court emphasised that railways must inform the passengers of delays, and failing to do so, may push them towards private transportation.
Facts: Shukla along with three others was unable to catch a flight to Srinagar in 2016 as his train arrived at Jammu Tawi station four hours after the scheduled arrival time. They had boarded the train from Alwar in Rajasthan.
The Supreme Court upheld the NCDRC’s decision that North-Western Railway is liable to pay Rs. 30,000 as compensation to impacted passengers. This included Rs. 15,000 for taxi expenses, Rs. 10,000 for booking expenses and Rs. 5,000 for mental agony and litigation expenses.
IRCTC pays compensation of Rs.100/- in case the train during its run, is delayed by more than an hour and Rs. 250/- in case of a delay of more than two hours to every passenger
To request a refund,
✅you can visit the IRCTC portal or a reservation counter.
✅Login to the IRCTC portal using the same account through which you booked the ticket to initiate the refund process.
✅The passengers can get help by calling the registered call centre (1800-266-5844) or by e-mail ([email protected])
The customer has to provide the PNR details along with the Certificate of Insurance (COI) number given by Liberty General Insurance Ltd. on the issuance of COI.
The passenger will also need to share a cancelled cheque and also mention the PNR and COI number.
On the other hand, if you have suffered a major loss due to the train delay, you can lodge a complaint with the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) for compensation.
