John Jay College MPA Program Special Event: Maker Faire 2014
On September 20, 2014, Professors Judy-Lynne Peters and Adam Scott Wandt accompanied students to Maker Faire 2014 at the New York Hall of Science. At Maker Faire the group explored new innovative technologies and inventions from around the globe. The technologies and inventions are the painstaking results of creativity and skills of the makers participating in the faire. The professors and students had the opportunity to learn and play with inventions that one does not encounter every day. In addition, they interacted with the individual makers of each invention and had the chance to ask specific questions regarding the technology and the thinking behind these projects. The group tied up the day with a discussion of specific policies that help promote innovation as well as the economic impact it could have on an area.
Maker Faire is an event created by Make magazine to celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.
