It is one of the oldest domesticated horse breeds and has significantly influenced many other breeds, including the Arabian and Thoroughbred.
The Akhal-Teke is considered a purebred horse, as it has remained a distinct riding breed for 5,000 years without being crossbred with other horses. It is well-adapted to hot, arid climates and also acclimates well to other environments. In literature, it is sometimes referred to as the Akhal-Teke, Tekke, or Turkmen horse.
