Imagine that this person here is you. The African country where you respawned is a shithole; there are no jobs, little food, and your future is screwed. So you decide to sell what you have and leave, trying to reach Europe, where you've been told it's paradise.
After weeks of traveling, you reach the coast of Mauritania. There you talk to the smugglers, that is, mafias who offer you a spot on one of the small boats to take you to the Spanish Canary Islands. The price isn't cheap: €1,500 for a place on a boat where there will be between 60 and 160 people.
So, if we do the math, the ALSA water ferry, if it's full, makes almost €250,000 per trip. With that kind of money, imagine the power these mafias have. But it's not all profit; to avoid problems, they pay around €12,000 to the Mauritanian police and army so that their navy will let them leave their waters freely.
