After death, humans are either reincarnated or sent to the void. However, upon death, before going to their eternal destination, they go to a "purgatory" of sorts where they meet an arbiter named Decim, in a bar called Quindecim. In order to fairly judge these human souls, he has them play a game to determine their true nature.
