YouTube is full of cover songs. Bands do it to get exposure; fans do it to display their devotion and parents do it to show off their cute kids. Whether the video is a live band performance or a toddler singing in his room, most of these cover songs are posted without permission from the song’s copyright holder—meaning they’re infringing someone’s copyright.

A lot of people think that if you write in the description something like: “I do not own this song” or “I do not mean to hurt anyone’s copyright”, they are not infringing the copyright of the owner, but that is not true. The only thing you can get with that notice is a little good karma on your side.
