Drum and bass (short for drum 'n' bass, drum & bass) is a type of electronic music that emerged in England in the early 1990s. The genre is characterized by accelerated breaks (typically between 150 and 190 bpm) combined with powerful bass lines. Drum and bass began as a branch of rave music in the early 1990s. Since then, it has evolved and combined with other styles, giving rise to multiple sub-genres.
The name drum and bass (literally translated as drums and bass) should not be misleading and make one think that this music is made up exclusively of these elements. However, it is true that both are crucial in the compositions of the genre.
As far as the electric bass line is concerned, the drum and bass has a sub-bass pattern (below 90 Hz) that has a physical effect on the listener. Since its birth, the producers of the genre have been concerned with investigating different timbres in the bass. The creation of the bass line is usually done by synthesizer or taken by samplers.
