n the ancient, conch-shaped town of Sankhu (Sankharapur), the Dyochen (Newari: Dyo-chen or God House) serves as the vital link between the celestial and the communal. While the Goddess Bajrayogini and her divine retinue reside in their forest sanctuary on the hilltop for most of the year, the eight-day Bajrayogini Jatra transforms the town's four Dyochens into the center of the spiritual universe.
The Divine Descent
The Jatra begins with the "Descent of the Deity." Amidst the thunderous resonance of traditional drums and horns, the bronze icons of Bajrayogini, Neel Tara, and other associated gods are carried down the hill in ornate palanquins (Khats). For these eight days, the Goddess leaves her secluded temple to live among her people, moving into one of the four designated Dyochens located in Dhunlla, Chalakhu, Suntole, or Illa.
The Sacred Rotation (The 4-Year Cycle)
The unique heritage of Sankhu is defined by its democratic spiritual rotation. Each Dyochen is managed by a pair of neighboring Toles:
Dhunla Dyochen: Salkha + Dhunla
Chalakhu Dyochen: Chalakhu + Dugahiti
Suntole Dyochen: Ipa + Suntole
Illa Dyochen: Pulhulachhi + Illa
The Dyochen is the heartbeat of Sankhu’s identity. For eight days a year, it bridges the gap between the hill and the hearth, ensuring that the legacy of Bajrayogini remains a living, breathing reality for the next generation.
