HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DAHLIAS

Dahlias are easy plants. Planted in April, they are already blooming in the most beautiful colors by July. But how do you ensure they stay beautiful until the first night frost? The most important thing is to consistently remove the spent flowers so that the Dahlia does not put energy into seed but continues to produce new flowers.

The spent flowers you need to cut off are sometimes difficult to distinguish from the new buds. The difference is this: a flower bud that is yet to bloom is fairly round and closed. A spent dahlia has a somewhat elongated shape, and if you run your finger along it, you will notice that the bud is no longer closed. It is soft. You cut the spent flower off as far down the stem as possible. Be careful not to cut off any branches with flower buds that are yet to bloom.

Furthermore, for the care of Dahlias, it is important to know what you want to achieve. If you want to pick flowers for a vase and have stems that are as long as possible, you should cut off the side branches with flower buds and leave only the main branch. If you want many flowers and the length of the stems doesn't matter that much, then leave the side branches as well.

Another tip: For a bushy plant with many flowers, you can shorten the main branch in May just above the second or third leaf axil. You will then get many more side branches.
