It's because they're poorly set.
There's a strategy for setting winning goals. Champion goals. These are SMART goals.
How to build a SMART goal.
Specific and positive.
To be well-set, a goal can't be generic. Furthermore, the goal must be formulated positively. Our subconscious mind can't process negatives. For example, "I mustn't be afraid" is a phrase that focuses on fear. "I must be brave" is a phrase that focuses on courage. Analytically, they have the same meaning, but lead to two diametrically opposed results.
Measurable.
When a goal is measurable, it has the advantage of knowing precisely how much is left and precisely when it was achieved.
Ambitious.
A goal that doesn't push beyond one's limits isn't motivating. We must dare and set goals that help us progress and improve.
Achievable.
For a goal to be motivating, it must be ambitious but also achievable. An athlete who doesn't believe they can achieve their goal will fail to achieve it and will build disempowering beliefs. An athlete who sets an ambitious but attainable goal will find all the resources within themselves to achieve it, and once achieved, they will create empowering beliefs and also improve their self-esteem.
Timed.
Obviously, the goal must have a deadline, otherwise it's not well-set. Even in this case, the deadline must be ambitious but achievable.
The final step to setting extraordinarily empowering goals that drive us toward victory is to DREAM!!!
