This video tutorial gives a basic ideas in how to create shapefile using qgis open source and free software. Qgis is a free and learn how to create shapefile in qgis 2.18. Basic idea in creating shapefile is based on point, line and polygon.

Today, we will try to learn how to create a shapefile in qgis. So here I'm using a satellite image
and let us try to capture these entire lake in a form of a shapefile , So to do this go to the layer select create layer and choose new shapefile layer, and it will ask you to store the file appropriate location. So let us name it here as a lake, choose a geometry type of polygon, because, we are going to capture a lake And using appropriate and Geo reference system for the shapefile. So once you have created a shapefile . To capture this Lake, now you have to go to the editing tool and simply click on it, now add polygon feature is added Now start capturing, like tracing a image from the satellite image So you have to try to zoom the layer Zoom the image into pixels so that the data will be more accurate So here I am trying to do in a rough sketch Once you done digitization, try to give some ID. Okay, so you can see that.Now you have captured this lake from the satellite image. Now you give for save edits and then do stop edits.this shape file is now. Can you edited by using its properties? go to the properties and try to change the color of the shapefile, so apply Ok. Now we can see that there is only one polygon and you can try to calculate the areas or you can do some analysis in future or for further analysis.
