If you want to add page numbers to a Word document, such as a thesis or dissertation, you can insert them either in the header or the footer. This tutorial works in Word 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, and Microsoft 365. While it's possible to insert page numbers in the margin, I would advise against this.
In addition to simple page number styles, Microsoft Word also offers pre-formatted options. These often include colored or bordered formatting. You can also use the "Page X of Y" format, which makes it immediately clear which page you're on and how many pages remain.
Once you've inserted the page numbers in the desired format, you can edit them. You can change the alignment (right-aligned, centered, or left-aligned), font, font size, font color, and so on. Additionally, you can use the "Format Page Numbers" option to specify whether the page numbers should be regular numbers (1, 2, 3), numbers with a hyphen (-1-, -2-, -3-), lowercase letters (a, b, c), uppercase letters (A, B, C), lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), or uppercase Roman numerals (I, II, III). Finally, you can also include the chapter number and separate it with a separator. For example, "p. 1-4" would then refer to page 4 in Chapter 1.
