Today we'll learn about Ham Long Pagoda, also known as Long Ham Tu, located in Nam Son Ward, Bac Ninh City. This pagoda is famous for its sacred and mysterious stories, and its renowned ability to ward off evil spirits throughout the country. The pagoda sits on a plot of land shaped like six wise men gathering, a beautiful feng shui location surrounded by four mythical creatures: the phoenix facing upwards to the southeast and southwest, the turtle facing downwards, and the unicorn bowing in front. A long, majestic ridge rises from the northwest like a divine dragon with its head held high and its jaw wide open – that's where Long Ham Pagoda, also known as Ham Long Pagoda, is located.

According to ancient records, Ham Long Pagoda in Bac Ninh was built in 1158 during the Ly Dynasty by the renowned Zen master Nguyen Minh Khong, also known as Ly Quoc Su. According to the Đại Việt sử kí toàn thư (Complete Chronicle of Đại Việt), the following is recorded about the monk: In March of the fourth year of the Bính Thìn year, 1136, the King was seriously ill and could not be cured. The monk Minh Không cured him and was appointed National Master. Legend says King Lý Thần Tông suffered from a strange illness that the people called "transforming into a tiger." He sought treatment everywhere but to no avail. A child sang that to cure the King, one must have Nguyễn Minh Không. He was invited to the palace to treat the King. He took a large cauldron of oil, boiled it vigorously, stirred it four times with his hand, and sprinkled it all over the King's body. The King was completely cured, and the King immediately appointed him National Master, granting him the royal surname Lý, hence the name Lý Quốc Sư (National Master Lý).

In the 18th century, Hàm Long Pagoda was renovated and expanded thanks to the efforts of Venerable Trịnh Thập, also known as Như Trừng Lân Giác, who is considered the first patriarch of the pagoda. After his opening sermon at Phat Tich Temple, he traveled to Ham Long Temple. Seeing that this temple, founded by Ly Quoc Su, had been there for a long time, with the seasons changing and no one to inherit its legacy, he began to spread his teachings among the people, becoming the abbot and rebuilding the temple to make it beautiful. He established a place for meditation, chanting, and preaching, attracting monks from all over the country to come and practice meditation and learn the Dharma. He attained enlightenment and transmitted the Ten Vows Sutra, and today everyone calls him the savior monk.
