Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which was more common prior to 1995. At that time, more than 4 million people in the United States got chickenpox annually. But, during the first 25 years of the United States chickenpox vaccination program, the vaccine has prevented an estimated 91 million cases.
Varivax is the primary vaccine to prevent a varicella-zoster virus infection, and the other is ProQuad to protect against measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox.
