This episode, we’re talking about ENCRYPTION.
Encryption is the process of converting data – known as plaintext – into a code – called ciphertext. This process prevents unauthorized parties from being able to read the information. In order to reverse the encoding process, you need the encryption key.
Most encryption protocols today use a pseudo-random encryption key generated by an algorithm, such as a large random number generator. Creating ever more complex, and thus more secure, algorithms is a key research and development goal for the IT industry (no pun intended).
There are two types of encryption in widespread use:
• Symmetric Encryption, in which the sender and the recipient use the same
key to encode and decrypt the data, and
• Asymmetric Encryption, in which each party has their own unique key.
It’s important to remember that encryption doesn’t prevent the bad guys from getting ahold of your data, but it can keep them from making use of it!
