Matthew Mitchell has worked in homeless health care since 2011 and serves as data strategist at Central City Concern, a homeless service nonprofit in Portland, OR. He leverages analytics and human-centered design to shape strategic responses to complex health and social needs.
Sometimes complex problems can have simple solutions. Program leaders at Central City Concern are constantly testing new interventions to meet the needs of their highest risk health care patients. One of the keys to creating successful interventions is targeting the right patients, so the leaders needed a flexible tool for identifying patient cohorts for testing new ideas. To meet this need, Matthew developed a “risk selector” Power BI tool based on a single view in SQL server. Despite its simplicity, the solution provides users the flexibility they need to identify the right patient for new interventions. Matthew will give us a peek under the hood, demo the tool, and highlight a few use cases.

Rachel Dyer is the Vice President of Analytics at CSG Pro with in-depth expertise of the Microsoft BI stack and dimensional modeling. She has a broad management background and strong communications skills, coupled with considerable technical experience in platform implementation. She is more commonly known as the Queen of DAX or Rachel DAXie Dyer.
SUMMARIZE(), SUMMARIZECOLUMNS(), GROUPBY, ADDCOLUMNS() and other grouping functions: how do they work and why do we care?
Grouping is key to aggregation, aggregation is key to DAX, DAX is key to Power BI. Why is it that the functions for grouping aren’t as simple as a SQL Group By? And why do you need group by in the first place if you can just build groupings in your pivot-like visuals?
This session will contrast SQL Group By statements and their corresponding DAX functions SUMMARIZE() and the newer GROUPBY() function. We’ll look at use cases for SUMMARIZE, best practices and why SUMMARIZE and it’s performance-booster ADDCOLUMNS are functions you’ll want to know and will come to love.
