Enabling Spanish-speaking students to learn computer science
Google is dedicated to making computer science education more accessible to Spanish-speaking students across the United States. For the 5 million English language learners in U.S. schools, language can be a barrier to accessing these opportunities. Increasing the availability of Spanish resources will invite more students to explore CS at school and at home, in a language they and their families know and understand. CS First aims to close this gap by providing teachers free instructional videos, English-language lesson plans, and other resources to introduce 4th-8th grade students to computer science in Spanish.
In addition to offering several CS First activities in Latin American Spanish, Google.org is making a $5M grant to UnidosUS, the YWCA and Hispanic Heritage Foundation. This grant is part of Google.org’s $25M commitment this year to increase Black and Latino students’ access to computer science (CS) and AI education across the US.
