Founding Dean John Mogulescu | Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of CUNY SPS
John Mogulescu is the founding dean emeritus of the CUNY School of Professional Studies and a former senior university dean for academic affairs for The City University of New York. Under his leadership, CUNY SPS has become one of the University’s fastest growing institutions, currently enrolling over 3,100 students in its degree programs and credit-bearing courses, and thousands more in its non-credit courses and programs. Created with the purpose of meeting the educational needs of working adults, organizations, and employers, CUNY SPS is home to CUNY’s first fully online degrees as well as a number of professional certificate programs.
Throughout his 30+ years in the CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, Dean Emeritus Mogulescu has developed programs in cooperation with virtually every New York City government agency and with many state agencies as well. From 2001-2017, the programs that Dean Emeritus Mogulescu oversaw generated over $1.1 billion in external grants and contracts.
Dean Emeritus Mogulescu oversaw the highly successful and acclaimed Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP), and other collaborative programs between CUNY and the New York City Public Schools, including CUNY College Now and the Early College High School Initiative. He also oversaw the Dr. Derek Griffith CUNY Preparatory School, the CUNY Language Immersion Program, the CUNY Service Corps and the CUNY Cultural Corps, CUNY Start, the Adult Literacy and GED Preparation Programs, special training initiatives for City and State workers, programs for welfare recipients, and the University’s Workforce Development Initiative. He was responsible for Adult and Continuing Education at CUNY and its non-credit programs which enroll over 250,000 students annually. Dean Emeritus Mogulescu also oversaw the NYC Early Childhood Professional Development Institute and the CUNY Creative Arts Team, and he supervised the creation of the Emmy Award winning T.V. series, “We Are New York.”
