UK Train Crashes - "Safety By Design" - BR Carriage Crumple Zones - Narrated by Carol Vorderman
The third episode in our new series shows the development of carriage design by British Rail in the early 1990's after the previous crashes at Clapham, Purley, Cannon Street and Cowden which all involved BR Southern Region "slam door" stock based on the standard British Rail Mk1 design. Each of the previous incidents had experienced "overriding" between carriages and was thought to be a contributory factor into the increase in casualties per incident. The result of the experiment formed the benchmark for future train carriage design including the new Class 465 "Networker" trains ordered by Network SouthEast.
