Aries-the-Ram was known to the Egyptians as the primordial god Amun, whose name means "hidden." This ancient ram-headed deity was believed to be the force hidden behind the invisible wind. He was also called "the one who dwells in all things" and was represented as the soul of all earthly phenomena. Pindar wrote a hymn to Amun, calling him "the lord of Olympus."
The numinous generative power of this Egyptian god suggests that there is more to Aries than mere battle. This deity is an image of phallic energy, in both men and women, as Amun is the primordial creative spirit that generates the manifested world from itself. There is no "cause" for this dynamic impulse.
The Greeks associated Amun, the creator god, with their own Father Zeus. He, like Amun, embodied the powers of generation and fertilization. He was the initiating principle and then maintained the continuity of creative life.
