VDI is the underlying technology that makes Cloud Desktops possible. DaaS is a term used by cloud service providers using VDI to deliver Cloud Desktops to their customers.

VDI is a technology that allows end users to access a Windows desktop from any type of device, from any location, with an Internet connection.

With VDI technology, a user’s Windows desktop, applications, and files (i.e. the users “Cloud Desktop”) are hosted on servers in a data center. Users can connect to their Cloud Desktop from any Windows, Apple, or Android device.

Many call centers, remote and mobile workers, contractors, and partners use VDI.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VDI AND DAAS?

VDI is the underlying technology that makes Cloud Desktops possible. DaaS is a term used by cloud service providers using VDI to deliver Cloud Desktops to their customers. In other words, DaaS is VDI that you buy as a service from a vendor.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VDI?

• Staff can work at home, at the office, or on the road.
• Even if a user’s device is lost or compromised your data and apps are safe within the data center behind layers of network and physical security.
• VDI compute resources can be scaled to meet demand and Cloud Desktops can be created or removed in minutes.

WHY SIGN UP FOR DAAS INSTEAD OF IMPLEMENTING YOUR OWN VDI?

• There is no CapEX investment, no special IT personnel needed, and you get a predictable per user price model.
• With DaaS, organizations of all sizes can reap the benefits of VDI at a fraction of the cost.
• Your DaaS service provider takes care of all aspects of your VDI service.

WHY WOULDN'T YOU WANT DAAS?

• If you have an unpredictable internet connection DaaS may not work well.
• If you use software intensive graphics such as 3d rendering or video editing that requires a graphics processor DaaS may not work well.
• If you are a large organization and have the expertise and resources to run VDI then it may be more cost effective to do it yourself.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERSIStENT AND NON-PERSISTENT VDI?

• Persistent VDI – each user gets their own desktop that they can configure and it remains the same for the next session.
• Non-Persistent VDI – a new desktop is created every time a user logs in and all changes to the desktop are lost at the end of a session.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DEDICATED VDI?

• Some DaaS providers will implement a VDI platform that shares compute, network, storage, and software resources between clients for cost savings.
• As a result, the boundaries between clients on the platform are weak and a security or performance issue with one client can impact others on the same platform.
• Dedicated VDI solutions provide better security as clients are segregated and issues are isolated.
