In 1937, the German passenger airship Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed while attempting to dock at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, USA. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 36 people and marked the end of the era of passenger-carrying airships.
In 1954, the musical film "The Country Girl" premiered in New York City. The film starred Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and William Holden, and Grace Kelly won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in this film.
In 1994, the Channel Tunnel (Eurotunnel) officially opened, connecting England and France beneath the English Channel. The tunnel provided a rail link between the two countries, significantly improving transportation and trade between the UK and continental Europe.
In 2001, Dennis Tito became the world's first space tourist when he traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Tito's trip marked a milestone in commercial space travel.
