~ ✨️🐚 Last week was Cobada (Hermit crab spawning cycle)
Cobitos (Hermit Crabs) have been part of my life since I was born.
I had the privilege of being born literally next to the sea. I have transmitted this love for the sea and the Cobos to my family along with the Ancestral values and knowledge that the sea represents in our Caribbean island indigeneity.
As a family we have been observing this great natural event for many years.
Where every year we wait for the right time to see them and we immerse ourselves in the thickness of our coastal forests to observe and monitor the event. I have a lot of unpublished material that can be used for scientific documentation in the future.
In Ancestral times and then in Jíbaro times, the Cobada was a very common event that occurred around our entire national archipelago.
This was an impressive natural event where once a year thousands of Cobos - Hermit Crabs (Coenobita clypeatus) come to the sea to spawn.
Now it is an extremely rare event to witness and the numbers of the cobitos are becoming fewer and fewer.
This is due to the excessive destruction of our coastal ecosystems due to excessive construction in recent decades.
The purpose of this video is to raise awareness so that we all make an effort to protect what is left of our coastal natural resources.

☆ We use red light. White light was used minimally for the purpose of video documentation of the event. The observations are always made in less than an hour so as not to intervene or disturb the Cobos. In this way we ensure that the process occurs as naturally as possible
