Sculptures "Mercy" and "Education." Video tour with Sergey Yartsev (0+)
The sculptures "Mercy" and "Education" were installed on the pylons of the entrance gates of the Imperial Foundling Hospital in the first quarter of the 19th century, as part of the Guardianship Council complex. The Guardianship Council building was constructed for the needs of the Imperial Foundling Hospital according to the designs of architects D. I. Gilardi and A. G. Grigoriev between 1823 and 1826. Sculptor I. P. Vitali was commissioned to create the sculptural decoration for the complex.
Presumably in 1971, the sculptures, by then severely damaged, were transferred to the Museum of Architecture for safekeeping, and copies were installed in their place. In 2021, with the participation of the Russian Association of Restorers and the Department of Heritage, a project was developed and restoration work was carried out on the white stone pylons and the sculptures "Mercy" and "Education."
