Custom Crafting - Minecraft Command Block Tutorial [1.11][1.10][1.9]
Here are three ways you can custom craft without /stats. These however, may come with some bugs and issues.

Commands used for the last example:
/scoreboard players tag @e[type=MinecartChest] add success {Items:[{Slot:0b,id:minecraft:diamond,Count:1b}]}
/entitydata @e[tag=success] {Tags:[],Items:[{Slot:0b,id:minecraft:redstone,Count:1b}]}
