Lee Saedol, formerly one of the world's premier Go players, experienced a landmark defeat not at the hands of another human, but from an artificial intelligence opponent. This defeat marked a turning point in human-A.I. interactions.

In 2016, Lee was defeated by AlphaGo, an A.I. program developed by Google’s DeepMind. The event was monumental, signaling a new era for A.I. by solving one of computer science’s most formidable challenges: mastering the complex strategy of Go. This game, originating over 2,500 years ago in China, involves two players competing to control territory on a 19x19 grid by placing black and white stones.

Lee, a revered 18-time world champion known for his intuitive play, was shocked by his loss. He hadn't anticipated AlphaGo playing such an impeccable game. This defeat demonstrated A.I.'s ability to surpass human capabilities in areas previously thought too complex for machines.

Three years later, Lee retired, believing humans could no longer compete with A.I. in Go. He felt the A.I. had fundamentally altered the game's nature. Reflecting on his loss, Lee described it as a moment where his world seemed to collapse.

Now 41, Lee is dedicated to educating others about A.I., urging people to familiarize themselves with the technology to avoid being caught unprepared. He lectures on A.I. at events, sharing the foresight he wishes he had before his match.

A.I. has since made strides in various fields, from creating lifelike chatbots to solving scientific problems like predicting protein shapes. It has also ventured into creative domains, producing music, art, and videos. Lee, although not a pessimist, acknowledges that while A.I. might replace some jobs, it will also create new ones. He emphasizes the human role in both creating the game and designing the A.I. that mastered it.

However, Lee expresses concern that A.I. might shift what humans value. Historically, creativity, originality, and innovation were highly prized. With A.I.'s advent, much of that seems diminished. Lee's own journey with Go began at age five under his father's guidance on Bigeumdo, a small island off Korea’s southwest coast. His talent quickly became evident, and by age 12, he turned professional. By 20, he had reached 9-dan, Go's highest mastery level, and was considered a star in the Go community.

As Lee's reputation grew, Go attracted interest from computer scientists. The game posed a significant challenge for A.I. researchers due to its complexity. The breakthrough came when DeepMind used neural networks, systems that learn by analyzing vast amounts of data, to create AlphaGo. The program learned from 30 million high-level moves and developed new strategies by playing against itself.

In late 2015, AlphaGo defeated a European Go champion in a closed match. Subsequently, Lee was approached for a public match with a $1 million prize. Confident of his victory, Lee accepted the challenge, not considering the possibility of losing.

The 2016 match in Seoul captivated millions, with huge audiences in South Korea, China, and Japan. During the games, a DeepMind engineer relayed AlphaGo's moves to Lee. The A.I.'s unique playing style and lack of a human opponent’s emotions were disconcerting for Lee. AlphaGo's innovative moves left Lee struggling.

AlphaGo won four out of five matches, a result that stunned Lee and his brother, also a professional Go player. This victory was a watershed moment for A.I., demonstrating its potential to learn and master complex tasks independently.

After the defeat, Lee found it difficult to enjoy Go, viewing it as more than a game but an art form expressing a player's personality. Feeling the A.I. had stripped away this element, he retired from professional play.

Despite his retirement, Lee remains connected to Go. He has authored books, created Go-inspired games, and founded a Go academy for children. However, his thoughts frequently return to A.I., driven by both its potential benefits and risks.
