The optimal surgical management for patients with malignant neoplasms of the thyroid gland warrants careful preoperative planning and intraoperative assessment of the extent of disease. This Panel Session builds on recent publications by the American College of Surgeons' Cancer Care Standards Development Committee on operative standards for thyroidectomy to describe critical elements in the surgical approaches to patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. The session includes a discussion of the current controversies in patient care, including extent of surgery for low-risk thyroid cancer and optimal management of locally advanced thyroid cancer.
