SYNTHESIS OF THE DISCUSSION
Although there is no exact definition of what authenticity means, researchers describe it as a state of self-awareness and self-determination which allows a person to act in ways that are aligned with their values, beliefs, and convictions. In that sense, being authentic can be as important to your well-being, as much as food, a home, and a good quality of rest. Just as you eat when you're hungry or sleep when you're tired, you need to act in a way that meets those core values and emotional needs.
In an article published in New Ideas in Psychology, researchers have identified authenticity as:
-Experience, give full attention to your present environment and your inner state.
-Understand or reflect on that present experience the connections between your thoughts, feelings and actions
-Analyze what is being experienced to identify if it is aligned with basic values and psychological needs.
-Decide or choose a response to what is being experienced that is aligned with those values
-Pay attention to all relevant details in a situation and make decisions based on what feels most in sync with your true self.
The above may sound simple, but how do you actually see it in practice, what does “true self” mean and how can you tell if you are acting in sync with it? Let's try to understand it from the following perspective: being refers to a collection of ideas that each one of us has about who we are. This includes the roles that each one performs, such as boss, son, husband, father, doctor, together with the skills that each one has, although they are not always aligned for each situation. For example, a nurse who is also a father may find situations where both roles conflict, because he may have a night work schedule that prevents him from going to the play at his son's school, or it may be that the daughter falls ill just before she has to go to work. an authentic person does not try to choose forcefully, but constantly reflects on himself and seeks to find balance. Being authentic is identifying all the aspects that are significant and making sure that you are acting in such a way that they are aligned to handle them according to what is required.
Being completely authentic and living in such a way can seem difficult for many people, because some do not feel safe or motivated to come out authentic, as they are afraid to speak about their experiences without fear of being judged or discriminated against. But beyond those fears, there are certain conditions that make it difficult to achieve it, such as when the person feels depressed, anxious, and feelings or traumas emerge that affect confidence in one's own thoughts. It's hard to be as authentic as possible when a person is overwhelmed with doubts about what their real version of themselves should be like.
