Mazda's Diesel Endurance Racers 10 Years On
At the 2013 24 Hours of Daytona. Mazda debuted a new racing car.
After the launch of Skyactiv technology, Mazda created a production-based diesel race engine to replace the aging rotary used in their outgoing Grand-Am racer. This engine was then used in a racing version of the new Mazda6 as well as an LMP2 car that the Japanese marque intended to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, unlike manufacturers like Audi and Peugeot, Mazda's diesel endurance racing efforts would be far from smooth sailing. Almost 10 years since the diesel Mazda6 rolled out onto the high banks of Daytona, we look back at the history of diesel Mazdas in sportscar racing.
