What Happened to LG OLEDs?
As you can imagine at this year's TV shootout at Value electronics they absolutely LOST?
Wait what? That can’t be right? LG OLED monitors and TVs are widely held as excellent, how could LG not take the crown in 2024, ok well surely they took WHAT, they didn’t even take second place and lost to an OLED with a matte finish? The same matte finish that many, many people were opposed to.
Fellas I don’t know what’s going on, but not only did LG lose this year's OLED shootout to a matte finish OLED, but the winner was last year's Sony A95L. So it goes to show that the matte coating as well as processing differences might have made a big difference as the matte coating OLED was Samsung's latest and greatest gen 3 QD OLED panel whereas the Sony A95L as far as I'm aware is still using the latest generation 2nd gen QD OLED panel.
What I mean to say is LG seemingly can’t even win against last year's QD OLED tech, and it apparently wasn't even that close, because the very polarizing S95D was also ahead of the 2024 LG G4 using the latest MLA & META technology.
Now credit to Sony for their excellent accuracy and processing, and hey if you want to pick up an A95L affiliate link in the description, but this news had me concerned for LG.
Now personally after reviewing the S90C, S95C, and LG G4 I would choose the G4, so I’m a bit surprised the G4 wasn’t closer to the Sony A95L, or heck didn’t win, but It goes to show that regardless of what I think, clearly many people are starting to turn their cheeks towards WOLED and I get it.
Look, no matter how much lipstick LG slaps on the G4 it still can’t match the color capabilities of QD OLED, and it's not close.
The really concerning bit about this is that I have not heard any solid info on them moving on from WOLED, and it seems like Samsung has a lot of juice left to squeeze out of their QD OLED tech, and if this is nearing the best that LG can produce, well they might be in trouble in the coming years as QD OLED could continue to widen the gap.
Now personally I do think LG has some major strengths such as excellent out of the box accuracy, a great user experience, and no major issues with ambient light turning the screen purple which is a huge problem for QD OLED, but if professionals and consumers prefer the color of QD OLED, then LG needs to make a change, and fast.
There have been some rumors about an ALLEGED RGB OLED possibly coming out in the next couple of years, and if I were LG I would jump on that fast, but again I’ve yet to hear anything solid about this, and personally I’ve been hearing a lot of sentiment both from monitor and TV buyers recently that they would prefer QD OLED over WOLED, so really LG has got to blank or get off the pot, because if they don’t, well take a look at a company like Intel to see what long term effect years of small improvements can do even many years after they started correcting course, because once a serious competitor pushed the boundaries of performance, well I hope LG has their brown pants in hand.
