About this project
In October 2022, I was fortunate enough to win the Convex Dream Pitch, the funding allowed me to pursue my dream of enhancing my motion design skills and creating the short film Precarious.
Set in an abandoned warehouse, themes of permanence/transience and waste are explored. I wanted to examine the aesthetics of living systems by creating tensions between the familiar and the alien, taking inspiration from Strange Clay Exhibition and sculptor Maria Bartuszová. Technology mediates our perception and enables us to see further/in new ways, but not necessarily faithfully. Observation and how lenses can alter our interactions and categorisations are central themes.
It has been 50 years since the release of Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow (GR). With the impending new arms race with AI as opposed to rockets in GR, I felt compelled to incorporate some of Pynchon’s fictional elements (i.e. Impolex) and build on them, to explore the precarious promises and perils of technology.
I created this work primarily using Blender and AfterEffects, with many Blender assets from BlenderKit. Other key add-ons/assets include Botaniq and Fractal Machine. Video Assets from ArtGrid and Music and SFX Stock Media provided by playbutton / Pond5. There are assets where I have modified/used tutorials as a starting point (Ducky 3D/Erindale/Cartesian Caramel)
