The regaining of battery capacity from 64% to 96% (2008 Prius) through the use of Hybrid Automotive's Prolong balancing kit. Lets extend the life of a Prius battery pack. Resistance/ heat are these batteries greatest enemy so lets get it lower.
The rebalancing/reconditioning (grid style) of all 28 modules can also help get rid of the RED triangle of death indicated by codes P3018, P3006,P0A80,and P3017, but if you already have one or more dead modules in your pack it may be to late to bring the pack back.
A dead module aka week cell or cells, is caused by the overheating of the individual cells. The excess heat causes the electrolyte to overheat and leak out of the cells. The electrolyte appears on the battery buss bars and bolts as green, blue, or white crusties. The cells located in the center of the pack retain the most heat and usually die first. Cleaning the buss bars and rotating the center cells to the outside of the pack and the outside cells to the middle will also help prolong the life of the battery pack. Once the electrolyte reaches a low level in the cell, it dies and can't be recovered. New used modules with like milage can replace dead ones and the entire pack cleaned and rebalanced for further use in your Prius.
There are a lot of ways to rebalance hybrid battery packs but after a little research I found the prolong system to be the easiest and most foolproof.
