At the end of the first half of their 2023 Divisional Round matchup, the Cincinnati Bengals had an opportunity to go up 21 to 7 over the Buffalo Bills. On 3rd and goal, Joe Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase over Matt Milano in the back of the end zone for the score. But after a replay review, the touchdown call was correctly reversed.
Matt Milano gets a hand on the ball, and you can clearly see the laces spinning before Chase gets his second foot down. As they head to the ground, Milano gets his arm between Chase’s hands and the football. He pins one of Chase’s hands to the ground, so he can’t use it to complete the process of the catch. You see Chase grasping for the ball and coming up with only Milano’s forearm. Then, for good measure, Milano rips at the ball on his way up.
Normally, having your Wide Receiver 1 going against any linebacker is considered a mismatch in your favor. Chase is elite, but on this play, he was no match for all-pro Matt Milano, who kept 4 points off the board by being in the right spot, knowing what he can do to affect the play, and fighting all the way to the whistle.
