What is GIS series: Map Overlay
The best way to understand "What is GIS" and what is GIS used for is to go back in time to pre-computer GIS days. With the technology stripped away, GIS is much easier to understand. Some people went to extraordinary lengths to do GIS analysis. Ian McHarg is one of those people.
In the video I demonstrate one of the earliest GIS examples. It's the strategic use of map overlay for urban planning. If you understand map overlay then you are a long way along the path to understanding GIS.
Ian McHarg is often credited with inspiring the development of GIS. I devote the first few minutes of the video to Ian McHarg's life experience. That drew him to see a link between the environment and health and happiness. He developed a Map Overlay methodology that allowed environment to be incorporated into planning decisions.
In the last 10 minutes of the video I demonstrate map overlay in action. To do this I use an example from Ian McHarg's book "Design With Nature". This is the most comprehensive example of Map Overlay I've ever come across. I'll walk you through it step-by-step. Understand map overlay and you're well on your way to understanding What is GIS!
