The main cause of unsightly limescale in toilets is excessively hard tap water (a significant amount of mineral salts). These mineral salts settle on surfaces, initially as a thin film, and then as a more noticeable layer. Rust from old water pipes, urinary calculus, food debris, and other substances also contribute to limescale formation.
Of course, it's best to periodically clean your toilet thoroughly to reduce the risk of limescale buildup. Once limescale has formed, it will gradually increase in thickness, making it very difficult to remove.
To remove limescale that has already formed (even if it's only a thin layer), more thorough cleaning is necessary. Never attempt to scrape off the buildup with hard or sharp objects. This way you can only damage the toilet and will not achieve cleanliness.
