The 110th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I was celebrated in August 2024.
The cruelty of time has distanced us from the events of the Great War, making artistic testimonies all the more valuable to us – the voices of people whose opinions on the war were born in the throes of creativity and the awareness that the Word is the most important historical source on the subject. But of particular value are the works penned by writers who served at the front, chroniclers who captured the living images of World War I in the immediate aftermath. Alexander Blok and Nikolai Gumilyov, Vladimir Mayakovsky and Sergei Yesenin, Mikhail Bulgakov and Alexander Kuprin – this is not a complete list of those who "equated the pen with the bayonet" and left us immortal lines scorched by the fire of war.
