How to choose an appropriate mid-tone base colour for your oil painting depends on the effect you wish to create. We explore mid-tone colour bases in mixtures of blue, red beige and grey. After painting these bases onto a pre-primed canvas, glazes are added on top using a mixture of oil paint with a medium of Linseed Stand Oil and a bit of White Spirit. By beginning with a mid-tone ground, it is easy to add contrast with dark and light paint or glazes.
