The Universality of Attraction: From Matter to Nibbāna
In this talk, I examine the principle of attraction (Sampayutta-paccaya) as a universal condition operating across all four ultimates of Abhidhamma philosophy: matter (rūpa), mind (cetasika), consciousness (citta), and liberation (Nibbāna).
I start by looking at physical magnetism and the biological patterns behind sensory attraction—from visual symmetry and proportion to why modern devices are designed to capture our attention. From there, I explore psychological attraction: how our attention shifts from unexamined emotional intimacy toward wholesome mental factors (pāramīs), and how we become captivated by ideas.
Crucially, I break down 7 distinct reasons why certain ideas attract us (including explanatory breadth, simplicity, novelty, personal flattery, and authority) and offer a central philosophical caution: we must never confuse an idea’s psychological appeal with its truth. Finally, I discuss how genuine spiritual progress means moving beyond sensory and mental compulsion toward the transcendence of attraction itself.
