"Öncelikle, eğer bir gazete hükümeti eleştiriyorsa, işini yapıyordur. Medya bu yüzden var. İnsanların hükümetlerini desteklemeliler mi, yoksa belki bir şeyleri değiştirmek için çalışmalılar mı, bunu bilebilmek için güvenebilecekleri bir ses olmak için var. Çünkü bu özgür medyanın kendilerine doğru bilgi vermesine ihtiyaç duyuyorlar. On yıl kadar önce Türkiye’ye seyahat etme şansım oldu. O zamanlar herkes Türkiye’den bir model ülke ve model toplum olarak bahsediyordu çünkü giderek daha açık ve daha demokratik bir hale geliyordu. Basın özgürlüğü vardı. Şimdi hükümet tarafından kapatılmış olan Zaman gazetesi vardı. Bu gazeteyi ziyaret ettik, o zaman ülkede en geniş şekilde okunan ve en saygı gören gazeteydi çünkü bağımsız bir sesti. Çünkü insanlar ona güvenebileceklerini biliyorlardı. Aldıkları bilgilere güvenebileceklerini ve böylece hükümetleri hakkında, neyi destekleyip, neyi eleştirecekleri hakkında doğru kararlar alabileceklerini biliyorlardı. Bu yüzden hükümetin Zaman’a el koyması benim için çok şaşırtıcı ve üzücü oldu. Bence bu durum hükümetin daha güçlü olmaya çalıştığını ve baskıcı bir hale geldiğini gösteriyor.

Çünkü insanların fikirlerini paylaşma ve açıkça ifade etmesi mümkün olmadıkça açık ve demokratik bir toplum olmuş olmayız. Eğer bir demokrasi olacaksak, elimizdeki tek yol bu, değil mi? Demokratik bir hükümetimiz olacaksa, insanların ülkeleri ve hükümetleri hakkında ve neler olmasını istedikleri hakkında kararlar verebilmelerinin tek yolu bu. Bilgi kaynakları ellerinden alınırsa, akıllıca ve zekice kararlar veremezler. Yani evet, özgür bir basınınız olmadan özgür olamazsınız."

If the newspaper was criticizing the government, it’s doing its job. That’s what media exists for, is to be a voice that the people can trust, so that they can know whether they should be supporting their government or whether they should be working to maybe to change something. Because they need that free media to give them good information. I was fortunate to be able to travel to Turkey about ten years ago and at the time everybody was talking about Turkey as a model country and a model society. Because it was becoming more and more open and more democratic. There was freedom of the media. The Zaman newspaper which has now just closed down by the government, we visited that newspaper, it had become the most widely read and the most respected newspaper in the country, because it was an independent voice. Because people knew that they could trust it. They could trust the information that they were receiving and therefore they could make good decisions about their government and what to support and what to criticize. So it was very shocking to me and very saddening when the government took over Zaman and to me that’s just, it indicates that the government is trying to become more powerful and is becoming oppressive.
Citizens can’t really be free where there’s not freedom of thought and freedom of expression. Because we can’t have an open and democratic society without the ability of people to share and openly express their ideas. That’s the only way we have if we’re going to be a democracy, right? If we’re going to have a democratic government that’s the only way we have for people to make decisions about their country and their government and what they want to see happening. If their source of information being taken away from them, then they can’t make wise, intelligent decisions. So yeah, you cannot be free, unless you have a free media.
