J.K. Rowling Praised Lolita as a “Great & Tragic Love Story”
Hi, welcome to Essence of Thought with me, Ethel Thurston, as your host.
In a recently rediscovered interview, self-proclaimed ‘defender of women and girls’, J.K. Rowling, gushed about how much she viewed Lolita — a story in which a 38-year-old man kidnaps and rapes a 12-year-old girl — as a “great and tragic love story”.
Something I regret not elaborating on is how Dolores (i.e. 'Lolita' as Humbert calls her) shares a name with one of Rowling's most despised characters, Dolores Umbridge, a hyper-feminine teacher who surrounds herself with all things cute... and tortures children before she's carried off and possibly raped. Makes one wonder why Rowling picked the name for her specifically...
Thought to add here incase anyone else wanted to talk about it in their own post. If so, do send me a link!
