On New Year's Day, my family and I visited Soho-in Temple in Machida, Tokyo for "Hatsumode", the traditional visit to pray for good luck in the coming year. We usually visit the Tenmangu Shrine, but this year the line up had hundreds of people waiting to get into the shrine. None of us were in the mood to wait for hours, so we decided to visit a local Soto Zen Buddhist Temple, Soho-in, to make our offering instead.

This was my first visit to Soho-in and I was struck by how quiet and peaceful it was there when only 500 metres away the lineup at the shrine was mind-numbing. Soho-in proved to be lovely in a rather understated way. Afterward, we walked to the train station and happened upon a display of some utterly gorgeous kimono. Finally, we discovered the first-ever vending machine in Japan that serves fresh-squeezed orange juice. Fun!
