A helpful overview of eligibility criteria and use of an NRO account for Persons of Indian Origin and Non-Resident Indians. If you are contemplating planning for your Indian property or other assets in India, an NRO account is helpful in streamlining income in India. To be eligible for an NRO account, Proof of Indian Origin is now a mandatory requirement as specified by the Indian authorities, certain conditions to be eligible apply.

Firstly, you should know that to repatriate funds abroad an NRO account is a financial tool enabling a seller to receive INR from the buyer. An NRO also enables you to receive income earned in India into your account NRO safely and securely. Specifically, an NRO account eligibility requires proof of Indian origin, PAN Card and other documents, depending on the chosen bank. Therefore, ensure that your PAN, proof of Indian origin, etc, are updated to date and obtained.
There are several authorised Indian banks abroad that offer NRO accounts; once applied for, it can take 5-9 days, sometimes sooner, for an account to be activated and subsequent documents, such as a chequebook, card, etc., to be provided.
