Part 1 of my return to hiking in the southern Sierra after a long break due to a knee injury. It was a slow first five days, but the mountains were as gorgeous as ever. I began in early August at Horseshoe Meadow and followed the Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail north around Mount Whitney before doing a bit of off-trail travel as I headed to the upper Kern Basin. Highlights included Cottonwood Pass, Rock Creek, Mount Guyot, Crabtree Meadows, Wallace Creek, Bighorn Plateau, Rockwell Pass, Tyndall Creek, and some amazing night skies and the Perseids meteor shower.
