When Ford Built a Mid Engined Boss 429 Mustang
You know, there are some things in life that just make sense. A good steak, for instance, should be cooked medium rare. Dogs should be bigger than cats. And a Mustang should have its engine at the front, sending power to the rear wheels in an uncivilized display of brute force and tire smoke. But in the late 1960s, Ford, in a moment of pure insanity—or, perhaps, sheer brilliance—decided that wasn’t good enough. What if, they thought, we took the mighty Boss 429 engine, shoved it behind the driver, and turned America’s favorite pony car into a road-going Le Mans prototype?
Yes, this happened. Well, kind of. One mid-engined, 429-cubic-inch, V8-powered, absolutely deranged Mustang was built. And then, like so many of Ford’s wildest experiments, it disappeared into the shadows, a glorious ‘what if’ of muscle car history.
