In this video, I demonstrate fixing normals in Blender using the viewport overlay to identify flipped normals and correcting them with 'Recalculate Outside' or 'Recalculate Inside'. I also cover selecting specific geometry and manually flipping normals.

WHO AM I?

Hi there! 👋 I'm Mike, and I'm relatively new to YouTube. I've been teaching Blender professionally for over 10 years, and I'm excited to share my knowledge with the community here. On this channel, you'll find full guides, courses, and tools to help guide, reassure, and educate you on your Blender journey. Let's create something amazing together!

In this video, I delve into the process of dealing with normals in Blender. Addressing normals can be a straightforward or a frustrating task, often depending on luck. Fortunately, Blender is equipped with all the necessary tools to resolve any issues with normals.

First, I demonstrate how to use the viewport overlay to toggle on face orientation, making it easy to identify flipped normals. Using Suzanne, Blender's monkey model, I show how some faces might have their normals facing the wrong way. To correct this, I explain how to enter edit mode, select the entire mesh, and use the 'Recalculate Outside' option from the mesh menu under normals. In rare cases where this doesn't work, the 'Recalculate Inside' option can be used.

Next, I address scenarios where only parts of the mesh are affected. Here, I guide you through selecting connected geometry with the L key and, if necessary, deselecting parts using Shift+L. I then demonstrate flipping the normals using the Alt+N shortcut. For those who frequently need this function, adding it to the quick favorites menu for easy access is recommended.

Finally, for those rare instances where you need to flip individual faces manually, I show how to do that efficiently. With these tips, fixing normals becomes a manageable task. If you're interested in more ways to visualize normal direction, make sure to check out the next video.
