What is an SMS Short Code?
An SMS short code, or Common Short Code, is a five or six digit number that businesses use for A2P, (application to person) communication.

What is an SMS Vanity Short Code?
Vanity short codes are 5 to 6-digit phone numbers that you specifically chose for your business for multiple reasons. The code may serve a specific purpose. For instance, 247247 may represent that your business is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. The user may spell out something on their phone dial pad that is the alphanumeric equivalent to that word — Here’s a great example. 7-Eleven uses 711711.

What is an SMS Random Short Code?
SMS random short codes are “randomly” selected. This means you are not the one who gets to choose the number of your short code phone number.
Rather, the U.S. Common Short Code Administration, randomly chooses the 5 or 6-digit number for you. Example: 154156 (Notice there is no pattern in the number).

What are the Differences Between SMS Vanity and Random Short Codes?
One – You get to choose the vanity short code phone number for your business, if it’s available. Whereas random codes are selected for you. Meaning you don’t get to choose your short code phone number.

Two – Vanity short codes cost $1500 per month to lease. Random short codes cost $1000 per month to lease. So, random codes are less expensive than vanity codes.

Three – Vanity short codes are easier to remember, whereas random short codes are not.

Four – Vanity short codes are a good option for marketing specific campaigns, such as text-to-win campaigns. Random SMS codes, on the other hand, are effective for one-way alerts, such as appointment reminders, fraud alerts, announcements, or order status
